Question: Can I move home folders to a new server WITHOUT
moving the data that is in the folders. (ie create a new home folder
without the data). When we move our middle school kids to the HS, we normally wipe out the home folders since they get so large. I know I can export the users from one context and then add them as new users to the new context, but then I loose the passwords.
Answer: EMU allows you to "re-assign" home directories to user accounts for which the home directory attribute has been "corrupted". In your case, you are going to start by causing the home directory information to become "corrupted".
You would need to carry out the following steps:
- Delete the users' home directories (Explorer, Filer, other utility).
- Use EMU to move the users to a new container or leave the accounts in the existing container.
- The users no longer have a valid "home directory". The "home directory" value has become "corrupt".
- In EMU, highlight the users for which you want to re-assign home directories or create new home directories.
- Select "Home Directory/Modify Home Directory-Adv"
- Reassign NDS Home Directory Pointers
- Select the New Parent Directory by browsing to the appropriate "Parent" home directory.
- Select "Modify".
This will cause a new home directory to be created for the highlighted users. EMU will create the new home directory, assign it to the account and assign the appropriate home directory rights to the user. If you want to change the default home directory trustee assignments, use EMU to modify those rights by highlighting the users in EMU and selecting the "Modify Home Dir" option.
