Question:  Can EMU be used to rename home directories of existing users?

Situation: Customer has used EMU to create student accounts using the Student Number (e.g. '12345') as the user name.  This created home directories that use the Student Number.  They want to rename user home directories to use a plain language user name (e.g. 'imsample').  The admin has the original .CSV import file used to create the student accounts and the "StudentID" column was used as the "User Name".

Answer:  Yes, EMU can do this using "Modify Account(s) From a File".

Procedures:  Use the following steps:

Modify the .CSV File

  1. Open the .csv file using Microsoft Excel.
  2. Create a new column labelled "NewHomeDir" and add the desired home directory name for each user.
  3. Save the file.
Locate the Users in EMU Using the .CSV File
  1. In the EMU main menu, select "Tools" > "Account Search Based on Data File".
  2. Click the "Select" button and choose the .CSV file modified above.
  3. Ensure that "StudentID" is being used for "Identifier Field" and that "User Name" is selected as the "comparison field".  Click "Next".  Select the container to start the user account search in and click "OK".
  4. In the "Report Information" pane, select the users displayed in the NDS Context, right-click and choose "Select in NDS View".
Modify Accounts From a File
  1. In the NDS Information pane, right-click one of the selected users, and choose "Modify Account(s) from File".
  2. Select the modified .CSV file and click "Open".
  3. Under the "Setup Information" tab, ensure that "StudentID" is selected for "Select Account Identifier Field:" and that "Login or Distinguished Name" is selected for "Select an eDirectory Field to match:".
  4. Select the "Home Directory" tab.
  5. Check "Rename user home directory" and select "NewHomeDir" from the drop-down list.
  6. Click the "Modify" button.
Verify Changes Made
  1. In the NDS Information pane, right-click one of the users modified, and choose "Display Account Information".
  2. Select "Environment & Login" and verify that the home directory was renamed.
  3. Click the "Close" button.
